How to: WebGL Using Unity 5
Unity 5 offers, as a preview, a new WebGL export target, letting your game run in browsers – no plugins, no installs, just play. That’s a huge opportunity for cross-platform games and for rapid testing and iteration, using exciting new tech. Colin’s team has spent months working with cutting-edge Unity/WebGL game developers, and he’s here to share what they’ve learned. You’ll learn about the cool (and amazingly hacky) underlying technologies, and also about some common issues with WebGL, along with tested solutions and workarounds. This is a practical talk for teams considering a Web build, or working on one now.

Intuitive Game Mechanics
Designers can create rich complex systems that players can sometimes have trouble learning. Though much can be achieved through good level design or in-game tutorial, this talk will focus on lower level elements intrinsic to how a game feels, looks, and presents its user experience. We will go over methods and techniques to improve game learning with respect to systems design, player controls, game mechanics, and feedback. We teach players invisibly, with the little overt explanation or tutorial.

Indie Audio: Smarter, Better, Faster
This session will explore the process of working with composers and sound designers while focusing on three primary areas. 1) Business: Contracts and budgets will be reviewed, walking through the process of hiring an audio contractor from start to finish. Sample contracts will also be provided as a reference. 2) Current Workflows: We’ll quickly look at the most common ways developers currently work with audio contractors, such as gameplay video captures and the iterative processes involved. 3) Optimized Workflows: We’ll discuss and demonstrate how to improve this process by taking advantage of modern tech and tools to create infinitely more dynamic audio experiences and streamline collaboration. In addition to demonstrating the new Unity 5 audio functionality, we will discuss the advantages of integrating audio middleware like Wwise. We will also show a live demo of the integration process for Wwise and demonstrate some of its basic functionality.

Pigs Can Fly and Audio Implementation Isn't That Useful
Sally Kellaway dissects a serious misconception of the role of audio implementation in the game development pipeline. Using FMOD Studio as an example, audio implementation will be explored for the potential it holds, focussing on the value of new tools and workflows that are on offer to sound designers and project teams. This discussion will enable sound designers to argue the value of upgrading and taking ownership of the audio pipeline to include advanced implementation tools, and will help indie developers become more knowledgeable and able to include audio as part of an inspired element of their overall game design.

The personal is always political. You are always entering into a battlefield of ideas and involving yourself in existing social and political dynamics in everything you create. But game creators are often either afraid to acknowledge or unable to articulate the ways they are contributing to this battlefield. Game musicians/critical writers Liz Ryerson and David Kanaga talk about the politics of making art, and how engaging in critical discourse has heavily morphed what they make and how they see the world as musicians and artists over the years.

How Do You Play?
There are more ways to enjoy digital games than ever before, whether it be touch screens, virtual reality, augmented reality, multi button/motion control game pads, and good old fashioned mice and keyboards.  But a designer's unlimited imagination can still be met with the limitations of the available platforms and resources.  Given these obstacles, how do developers conceive new ways to play, whether it be sniffing pugs, controlling an orbital weapons network, or playing God?  Who will win in the battle between function and form?  Join us and find out!

So B it's Good: The Craft of Games Between Indie and AAA

Between the indie darling and the multi-million blockbuster are BBB games, the land of cult classics and oddities. Diversity, Inclusivity and Games: An IndieCade Town Hall, brought to you by Intel
As indie games have become a more important and influential part of the industry and game culture as a  whole, we confront a wide range of issues and opportunities. Though we see an ever-increasing number  of women, people of color and members of the LGBTQ communities in games, there are still substantial barriers keeping us from being a truly inclusive and diverse space. Join Intel and the IndieCade community for an open conversation exploring the challenges and successes. Ultimately, we will seek constructive, actionable steps we can take.

Exhibition Play: A Quiet Year
Join us for an exhibition playthrough of A Quiet Year, a game by Avery Mcdaldno. From the game's description:

The Quiet Year is a map game. You define the struggles of a post-apocalyptic community, and attempt to build something good within their quiet year. Every decision and every action is set against a backdrop of dwindling time and rising concern.

The game is played using a deck of cards – each of the 52 cards corresponds to a week during the quiet year. Each card triggers certain events – bringing bad news, good omens, project delays and sudden changes in luck. At the end of the quiet year, the Frost Shepherds will come, ending the game.

GameU Session 8: Designing the Games That You Want in the Face of Adversity
Let’s face it - being an indie developer sucks sometimes. So many developers compromise their integrity to attempt to get the chance to build what they want, and many end up not reaching that goal, becoming burnt out on the grind, losing sight of their passion or delivering a fraction of what they intended and destroying their vision in the process. How do you hold true to the games you want to build while trying to get a startup off the ground? Even scarier, how do you stay true to your studio’s design goals as you realize you need to cover a potential gap between projects? How do you build a startup, designing the games that you want without starving to death? In this talk, WhiteMoon Dreams talks about holding true to the studio’s design goals while trying to keep the studio afloat and growing from a bedroom developer to a multi-project studio without doing projects or creating habits that compromise these ideals. We walk through the studios core ideals, building prototypes, doing bizdev as indies, laying off people, incentivizing our family through everything except money, building developer communities and every other last bit of deliciousness we’ve tried over the last 8 years to stay true to our vision and do exactly what we want – no matter the cost.

GameU Session 10: Crowdfunding Crazy Ideas
Sometimes the seemingly “craziest” ideas are the most powerful and transformative - but all too often, crazy ideas aren’t given the opportunity to be explored. Crowdfunding has opened the doors for creators of all backgrounds to bring their ideas to life! Not least of which are ideas that would have otherwise been too experimental, risky, or “out there” to find funding via more traditional means. However, in addition to the many challenges, complications, and risk of crowdfunding, experimental ideas face a number of unique issues and complications - many of which are not well documented or widely discussed.
The biofeedback horror game, Nevermind, is known for, among other things, its two Kickstarter campaigns - one failed and one successful. However, the story and journey of Nevermind and crowdfunding goes much deeper than that. This talk discusses Nevermind’s crowdfunding journey and some of the unique challenges creators of experimental projects can face when it comes to crowdfunding - from finding the right message to sharing it with the world… and everything in-between.
